What is an IEC Code?
An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. It is mandatory for any person or business entity engaged in import or export of goods and services. Without an IEC, you cannot clear customs in India.
Who Needs an IEC Code?
- Exporters — Anyone shipping goods from India to foreign countries
- Importers — Anyone bringing goods into India from overseas
- Service exporters — IT companies, consultants, and service providers earning foreign exchange
Note: Individuals importing/exporting goods for personal use (not for trade) are exempt from IEC requirements, subject to certain value limits.
Documents Required for IEC Registration
- PAN Card — PAN of the applicant firm/company/individual
- Aadhaar Card — Of the applicant or authorized signatory
- Bank Certificate — Pre-printed cancelled cheque or bank certificate on letterhead
- Current Account Details — Active bank account linked to the entity
- Digital Photograph — Passport-sized photo of the applicant/signatory
- Address Proof — Rent agreement, utility bill, or ownership proof of business premises
Step-by-Step IEC Registration Process

- Fill Application Form — Enter entity details, PAN, address, bank details, and authorized signatory information
- Upload Documents — Attach scanned copies of all required documents

IEC Registration Fees
The DGFT charges a nominal fee of Rs 500 for IEC registration. This is a one-time fee — there are no annual renewal charges. However, you must update your IEC details annually on the DGFT portal to keep it active.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- PAN mismatch — Ensure the PAN used matches exactly with your business entity name
- Bank account type — Must be a current account for businesses (savings account for proprietors)
- Annual update — Failing to update IEC between April-June each year can lead to deactivation
- Multiple IECs — One PAN can have only one IEC. Applying again will result in rejection
